Family
History:
The surname Mather was first found in Kincardineshire a former county on the northeast coast of the Grampian region of Scotland, and part of the Aberdeenshire Council Area since 1996, where they held a family seat
from early times and their first records appeared on the early census
rolls taken by the early Kings of Britain to determine the rate of
taxation of their subjects.

Spelling variations of this family name include: Mather, Maider, Maddir, Mador, Madeer, Mathers and many more.
At
first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the
battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armor
encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his
followers, was the insignia painted on his shield, and embroidered on his
surcoat, the draped and flowing garment worn over the armor. Between the 11th
and 15th centuries it became customary for surnames to be assumed in Europe, but
they were not commonplace in England or Scotland before the Norman Conquest of
1066.
